How to Choose the Most Pet Friendly Weed Killer

Home / Gardening Problems / How to Choose the Most Pet Friendly Weed Killer

In a world of toxic herbicides and agricultural ingredients, home gardeners are ever in search of healthy weed killers. These non-toxic products are not just good for your garden, they’re great for any animals that might be roaming around – including your pets. Pet friendly weed killer helps to keep the neighborhood cats and dogs safe.

But what sort of weed killers are good for pets, and how can you be sure? This article explores the use of some non-toxic weed killers that you can use without having to worry about the safety of your pets.

Examples of Pet Friendly Weed Killer

There are a lot of pet-friendly weed killer products available. There are also lots of weed killers you can make yourself. Here are some examples of both.

Pet Friendly Weed Killer Products

  • Doctor Kirchner Natural Weed & Grass Killer. This product is made from ocean salt water and is free from harmful chemicals. You don’t need to mix it and it should be safe for pets.
  • Espoma Organic Weed Preventer. This is another weed-killing product that uses corn gluten meal granules. It’s easy to apply and should be safe for pets.

Let's Work Together!

Here are some ways that you can get rid of weeds on your own without having to buy much.

  • Salt water. When you consider that one of the products above is made from ocean saltwater, it shouldn’t come as much surprise that you can just use your own salt water to kill weeds. Just mix salt liberally with warm water and apply it to weeds. When the roots absorb the salt, the plants will become dehydrated and die.
  • Vinegar. Vinegar is another common do-it-yourself solution for killing weeds. Vinegar can also help to disrupt the health of plants. It works even more effective when combined with salt.
  • Hot water & steam. You might be surprised to learn that you can also boil and steam weeds to death. Granted, this solution might not work in yards that have huge numbers of weeds – but since you only need one ingredient – water – it’s a great solution. Simply boil some water and pour it onto the weeds you want to kill. Afterwards, upturn a bowl or pot to capture the steam. The boiling water will damage the roots and the steam will cook the leaves.
  • Manual weeding. The most harmless solution for killing weeds, of course, is to just pull them out yourself. This is more time consuming but doesn’t involve the use of herbicides or products. Plus you’ll get to know your garden in a more intimate way.

Conclusion

There are many ways that you can eliminate weeds without harming your pets. These are solutions for permanently killing weeds without the hassle and without risk. Natural weed killers reduce harm to animals and help keep the ecosystem safe and healthy.
