The Best Methods of Organic Weed Control

Home / Gardening Problems / The Best Methods of Organic Weed Control

If you’re hoping to take care of your garden without damaging your lawn or your garden, then you should consider organic weed control. Organic weed control involves the use of natural and DIY herbicides and weed control solutions. These work to help get rid of invasive weeds without hurting the ecosystem.

There are many different options that could be considered organic weed control. This article will discuss some of the most popular choices that you can use to get rid of weeds organically.

The Best Organic Weed Control Ideas

Organic weed control doesn’t only mean natural herbicides. There are some preventative measures and landscaping ideas that can also help to get rid of weeds without damaging the ecosystem.

Start mulching.

Mulching is one of the best ways to help control weeds in your garden. Mulch helps by blocking sunlight, preventing weeds from photosynthesizing. It also helps to hold moisture in the soil which is good for the plants that you want to keep around.

Use some landscaping fabric.

If you’ve ever wondered what that thin, grey fabric poking out from underneath your friend’s garden is, it’s landscaping fabric. Landscaping fabric, especially when combined with mulch, helps to prevent weeds from growing in a given area.

Use hot water.

Many people are surprised to learn that they can use steam or hot water to get rid of undesirable weeds. Simply boil some water, pour it overtop of any unwanted plants, and then cover them up with an upturned bowl or pot. This traps the steam. If the boiling water doesn’t kill the plant, then you’ll most likely steam it to death.

Salt & vinegar.

Salt and vinegar don’t just make for great potato chip flavorings. They can also be used to help get rid of weeds.

If you’re going to be using vinegar, however, you want to make sure that you’re getting strong stuff. Food-grade vinegar is only 5% acetic acid. Look for potent vinegar in a concentration of 15-20% acetic acid.

You can also make an organic weed killer with salt. All you need to do is mix some rock salt in with hot water until it’s dissolved and pour it onto your weeds. Afterward, mist or water them so that the salt seeps into the soil. However, remember that salt can adversely affect other plants in your garden. Avoid using it where you want plants to thrive.

Baking Soda.

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is another useful alternative for people who want to get rid of weeds without destroying the environment.

Your baking soda can be used in much the same way as salt. Mix it with water and apply liberally to your weeds.

Conclusion

There are many methods of organic weed control. Some involve the use of organic herbicides and others are tips and tricks that you can employ in your garden.
