Stink bugs belong to the family of insects called Pentatomidae. Scientific name of this insect is Halyomorpha halys. They were introduced in United States accidentally from China and Japan. The adults of the species are about half inch long. The stink glands of this insect are present under the thorax, i.e., between the first and second set of legs.
These pests are known to cause a lot of damage to fruit and vegetable crops. Many gardens have also got damaged because of stink bug infestation. They stab their proboscis into the fruits, vegetables, or leaves and damage the standing crop. For this reason, it is important to get rid of them at the earliest.
One of the most important points to keep in mind while attempting to kill these bugs is not to crush them, as they emit their signature odor which may cause more bugs, attracted by the stench, to infest your area. One can make use of pesticides to kill these foul-smelling pests. Alternatively, they can also be killed organically.
Ridding Your Garden of Stink Bugs
You can make use of cypermethrin for controlling the infestation of stink bugs. Cypermethrin is a pesticide that can be sprayed liberally all over the house so that the spray drips down to the garden. The effect of this pesticide will last for a few weeks.
If the area you reside in is infected by these pests, you can also make use of insecticides as a precautionary measure. If the area is horribly infested by the bugs, then you may want to seek help from professional pest control agencies to get rid of them.
Common among the ways to get rid of stink bugs is using pyrethrin aerosol spray. The spray bottle should be shaken well before use. The spray gives quick results. If these bugs have attacked in large numbers, you will want to use pyrethrin aerosol fogger. Before that, ensure there is no food in the open and no open flames. Shake the can well before using.
Killing Stink Bugs Organically
There are different organic methods which can also be used to kill stink bugs. The first measure is to get rid of any weeds in the garden. Weeds give these insects a good cover, hence, should be removed. The next step is to spray mineral clay solution on the plants.
When the plants are sprayed with this solution, the eggs of these bugs will not be able to hatch or feed on the plants. This solution is safe for plants. If sprayed on edible plants, all you will have to do is wash it off under running water to get rid of the clay solution.
There are some organisms known to be predators of these bugs. They may not be available commercially, but if you live in an agriculture area, these predators may be present there. These may be available for pest control from state pest control agencies. You can use this organic method to protect your crops and gardens from the menace of these insects.
To get rid of stink bugs from tomato crops or other plants, you can use a homemade solution. Shred half a pack of cigarettes in warm water and let it stand for sometime. Then, filter the nicotine water to separate tobacco leaves. Add some liquid dish washing detergent to the filtered water. Pour this into a bottle and spray it on the bugs to remove them.
You can make use of any of these methods to get rid of stink bugs. Make sure you keep your pets and your children away from these bugs. If the infestation is in large numbers, you may want to seek help from professional agencies to get rid of the bugs.
