Storage cabinets are necessary for every room, especially the garage. Mentioned lists the various things to look into while installing cabinets in your garage.
Today, more and more people are opting for cabinets for their garage. As compared to open shelves, the popularity of cabinets for storage purposes has greatly increased. This is because cabinets have several advantages.
Apart from creating some extra space, they are helpful in improving the look of the garage as the stored items are not visible. They are also safe to store harmful substances within locked doors of the cabinets, away from children and pets.

Planning the Design

The cabinet design is based on two major factors. One is the space available, and the second is the requirements of the garage.

Space Available

Prior to choosing any cabinet design, you have to decide the amount of space available inside your garage after parking your vehicles and storing other accessories. Therefore, the first step is to measure your garage so that you can determine the size and design of the cabinet that you will need.
Even if there is not enough unoccupied space available, you can still put up cabinets. For this, opt for hanging cabinets with sliding doors so that no extra floor space is occupied. Then decide the position you want them in. This is important because the cabinets should be placed in such a way that they do not create any obstruction for the vehicles.

Requirements of the Garage

The purpose of the cabinets is to store tools and equipment in a more organized way. When you plan the design, you have to keep in mind the kind of tools and equipment that will be stored in the cabinets. More precisely, the size, structure, and weight of the equipment has to be considered.
Then you can decide whether you need cabinets that are rectangular-shaped or square-shaped, or standing cabinets. You will need shelves that are easily accessible where you can keep power tools. There should be a drawer next to the shelves where accessories of the power tools, small hardware materials like nuts, bolts, screws, nails, etc. can be stored.
These drawers can be further organized by putting up some dividers to keep the materials separate. The size of these shelves and drawers will depend upon the size and number of tools you plan to keep in them.

Selecting Cabinets

There are a wide variety of cabinet designs available in the market. Cabinets made of plastic material are highly popular as they are not very expensive. Other advantages of plastic ones are that they are water and rust resistant, and can be cleaned very easily. They are detachable and are easy to install too.
Most of them are available with shelves that can be adjusted as per your requirements. Another popular option is cabinets made of steel; though they are very expensive, they last for a long time. Laminated plywood is also a great idea; these kinds are found in various styles and colors.
In case you your budget is tight and you cannot afford to buy expensive cabinets, you can build one on your own. On a smaller budget, an excellent idea is to utilize old kitchen cabinets in your garage. You can also buy used kitchen cabinets which are found in the classified ads of the local newspaper.
With proper storage cabinets, you will be able to get rid of the clutter in your garage. You can also use the spare space available for various activities like a workshop, a game room, or a hobby room for the kids.
