Cleaning outdoor furniture is a bit difficult as compared to indoor furniture, simply due to the fact that they remain exposed to harsh environmental conditions. But resin outdoor furniture is quite popular in this regard. Some types of resin furniture are manufactured in such a way that they closely resemble painted wood.
So, those who cherish the classic look and elegance of wood furniture can go for the resin furniture. Resin is actually a type of plastic, but rendered very hard by polymerization. So, resin furniture is quite tough and durable; only a porous finish can make it susceptible to stains. If cleaned and maintained properly, it can last several years.

Care and Maintenance of Resin Outdoor Furniture

Cleaning resin furniture is not very difficult, if you follow a proper cleaning schedule and the right procedure. For regular cleaning, you can use water and a mild soap or detergent, or a cleaning product specifically manufactured for this purpose.
Make a soapy solution, and use a sponge to wipe the furniture in a circular motion. Then rinse it with clean water. Do not use abrasive cleaners like steel wool and scouring powder, as these products can scratch the surface of your furniture. Even hard plastic and metal brushes can do considerable damage to the surface, and make the furniture dull.
For removing tough stains, bleach can be used. Mix bleach, detergent powder, and water to make a solution. Now, apply this solution with a sponge or soft brush, and scrub the furniture gently. Finally, rinse it with clean water, and allow it to dry properly.
As bleach is quite strong, it can discolor the colored furniture. Therefore, try this solution in an inconspicuous area before applying it on the entire furniture. Do not apply a highly concentrated solution of bleach and detergent on your furniture.
Baking soda is another effective cleaner. Just use a wet sponge to scrub or wipe the furniture with baking soda, and then rinse it with water. Vinegar is a very effective cleaner for removing mildews and molds. It can also inhibit their growth for a while.
Just spray some white vinegar on the area and scrub with a soft brush. Vinegar can also be mixed with dish-washing soap for cleaning resin furniture, or you can make a paste of white vinegar, baking soda, and ammonia to scrub the areas having mildews. But remember to wear protective gloves while using these substances for cleaning.
Though resin furniture is very durable and long-lasting, its longevity depends to a great extent on proper handling and maintenance. If you keep the furniture in direct sunlight for a long time, its color and shine can fade.
On the other hand, if you keep it in a completely shaded area, then mildews and molds can grow on the surface. Therefore, keep the furniture in a place moderately exposed to direct sunlight.
Do not forget to clean liquid spills immediately. This will prevent hard stains, and make regular cleaning much easier. If your resin furniture has lost its color and shine, you can consider to apply a wax. You can apply an automotive paste wax occasionally to make the furniture resistant to moisture and stains.
